Couple who bought Mercedes make their own donation to Joplin School District

JOPLIN, Mo. — The couple who bought a vintage Mercedes at an auction that benefited the Joplin School District have made their own donation of $130,000 to the Joplin Schools Recovery Fund.

The car, a 1959 Mercedes 190 SL convertible, was donated by singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow. It was valued at $50,000 to $80,000, but brought $130,000 at auction.

The couple who bought the car and made the donation wish to remain anonymous.

“This donation originally estimated at $50,000 to $80,000 has now raised more than $260,000 for Joplin schools,” Brian Fogle, president of Community Foundation of the Ozarks, said in a statement Thursday. “That’s a remarkable return.”
